Chapter Twelve

Kate was a ball of anxiety as she drove over to Jared’s apartment. The last time she had risked her heart and admitted that she had feelings for him, it had blown up in her face. Although he had eventually come around and confessed that he felt something more than friendship, too, the humiliation of that moment was fresh enough in her mind that she was hesitant about a repeat performance. Yet, circumstances had changed drastically since then, and she felt confident that Jared felt something strong for her.

It had been five days since he had dropped her off after their trip. Each day that passed and she didn’t hear from her, the ache in her heart worsened. She had agreed to give him space to figure things out, but she could no longer stand being left in limbo. If she came clean with him about everything, maybe he would see how much they belonged together. At night, she would lie awake and relive the electricity of his kiss. Something that powerful couldn’t be ignored, and Kate only hoped that it was more than just a physical pull on Jared’s part.

The evening before, Kate had her first vision of Kendall McDuffy. Although the vision hadn’t given her the girl’s whereabouts, it at least let Kate know she was alive. Kate had done online research on the girl and found out more about her upbringing through recent articles about her disappearance. Kendall’s father had died from brain cancer when the girl was eight. Her mother had remarried three years later and moved away from their hometown of Brick to South Harrison.

While attending middle school in South Harrison, Kendall was described as an outgoing girl who excelled in sports. However, since she had turned fourteen and entered high school, Kendall’s grades had been slipping and she had been in a few fights on school grounds. There were also rumors of heavy drinking and recreational drug use. Her erratic behavior made police believe the girl had run away.

Kendall’s memory had unfolded like a movie without Kate hearing her thoughts, a good sign. Since Kate usually only heard the thoughts of children or those in some sort of distress, it gave her hope that Kendall was unharmed. The news reports about Kendall she had come across lent credibility to the runaway theory, but something in Kate’s gut was telling her to keep searching for the teenager.

Kate sat in her car for a long minute after parking in front of Jared’s apartment building. She shuffled through the songs on her iPod until she settled on an upbeat techno track. Bouncing up and down in her car for a few minutes, she felt her blood start to pump and her confidence build. Her heart and body were ready to make Jared hers forever.

Kate took a second to check her reflection in the rearview mirror. She smoothed down a couple of stray frizzy hairs and checked her teeth for lipstick marks. Instead of the trench coat seduction, she had gone for a simple and pretty style.
